April 4-6 2025- Forest City Illinois. This course will not be canceled due to weather unless it is a true safety concern. FireCraft will proceed rain, snow, or shine..

Do you struggle with making a fire in bad conditions? Are you pretty good at making fire, but wish to become better equipped by learning alternative methods? Come on out and let your inner pyromaniac come alive with Certified Wilderness Skills Instructor Kevin Johnson from Midwest Woodcraft and friends at FIRECRAFT!

This is a 1.5 day 1 night event that takes an in-depth look at starting and utilizing fires with a variety of different methods and weather conditions with an emphasis on wet weather. Staying overnight is not required, there are hotels within 20/30 minutes and full Camper/RV sites within 10 minutes The class will be moderately vigorous with plenty of hiking and timed segments.

$150.00 per student.
(Students 13 and over only please unless arranged beforehand. Students under 18 must have a guardian present or waiver signed by guardian)

Subject matter is likely to include…

Fire lays and prep
Manmade tinder
Natural tinder sources and tinder/bird nest bundle construction
Ferro rod
Flint and steel
Cotton Roll fire
Lighter and matches
Solar fires*
Battery and steel wool
Finding and using fatwood
One stick fire
Making fire with saturated materials
Signal fire
Burn-in bowl/spoon
Fatwood torch
Bow Drill*

Jerky making

Soap making

Smoke baths

The fee includes class, camping, Lunch on Saturday, and access to facilities. Please bring food and any snacks or non-alcoholic drinks that you like. Expect hikes of up to 1 mile in length. There will be access to water and primitive restrooms on-site. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing and footwear so you will be comfortable. There will be a larger community campfire, as well as the ability to have a small fire at your individual campsites for your cooking and warming needs.

*Class begins Friday April 4th at 3pm and will conclude Sunday at 3pm.

*Students are responsible for their own meals/snacks*

*A community meal (Chicken & Noodles) will be provided on Saturday night at 6:30 pm.

-Gear List-

-Your favorite camping gear

-Any snacks, food, drinks or medications you may need.

-Fire kit including lighter, matches, magnifying lens, ferro rod, flint and steel striker we will have some to loan

-hatchet or camp axe

-Knife (full tang- fixed blade recommended)

-Saw (folding saw or bow/bucksaw)

-100' of cordage (Paracord or #36 Bankline)
